Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 003 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that: (a)At the Angle Dock, the 3 Ton P&H Beta Hevi-Lift Overhead Hoist had the wire rope with multiple kinks which was not taken out of service exposing employees to struck by hazards. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable means to correct these hazards are to use a safer alternate method such as implement removal criteria for the rope replacement as outlined in ASME B30.16-2003 Overhead Hoist (Underhung), Section 16-2.4.2 (b)(5): Removal criteria for the rope replacement shall be as follows: kinking, crushing, birdcaging, or any other damage resulting in distortion of the rope structure. Certification, with date and method of abatement required. Certification of abatement is required by 29 CFR Part 1903 and is to be submitted within ten (10) calendar days after the abatement date.ment
