Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to struck by hazards, while operating an overhead hoist in the Woodyard Maintenance Shop: On or about 02/24/09 at Augusta, GA: Employees were exposed to struck by hazards while operating an overhead hoist, which was located in the Woodyard Maintenance Shop. The 1 Ton hoist's lower hook did not have a safety latch installed. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THESE HAZARDS IS: a. Reference: ANSI B30.16-2007 (16-2.1.2 Inspection) The employer should perform frequent inspections on its hoists to ensure that defects are identified and repaired. A safety latch should be installed on the lower hook to abate the hazard. No abatement certification or documentation is required for this item.
