Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 003 Hazard: CRUSHING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck or crushed by moving motorized vehicle(s): This hazard existed on or about July 18, 2006, and at times prior thereto at the scrap metal yard of the metals recovery facility,in that the employer did not ensure operational condition of vehicles prior to their operation on premises. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard include, but are not limited to: 1. Remove yard trucks from service when they are found to be in unsafe operating condition, including but not limited to obstructed rear-view mirrors, audible horns, reverse motion alarms and working lights. 2)Do not allow a truck which has an obstructed rear view to be used in reverse unless another employee (a "Spotter"), can signal its operator that it is safe to do so.
