Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 003 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that transfer ladles and spreader bars used in the pouring department are not labeled as to the capacity of the lifting device, exposing employees to thermal hazards from molten metal splashes and crushing injuries from dropped mold weights if the lifting devices were to fail: a.Quincy Castings, Inc. located in Quincy, Ohio: On or about January 10, 2007, the employer did not ensure the #4 transfer ladle used by employees to pour molten metal on the pouring line was labeled as to its capacity. The ladle can carry up to 854 pounds of molten metal and have a total weight of 1600 pounds. b.Quincy Castings, Inc. located in Quincy, Ohio: On or about January 10, 2007, the employer did not ensure the #1 transfer ladle used by employees to pour molten metal on the pouring line was labeled as to its capacity. The ladle can carry up to 854 pounds of molten metal and have a total weight of 1600 pounds. c.Quincy Castings, Inc. located in Quincy, Ohio: On or about January 10, 2007, the employer did not ensure the "C" transfer ladle used by employees to pour molten metal on the pouring line was labeled as to its capacity. The ladle can carry up to 854 pounds of molten metal and have a total weight of 1600 pounds. d.Quincy Castings, Inc. located in Quincy, Ohio: On or about January 10, 2007, the employer did not ensure the spreader bar used by the weight shifter to transfer 300 pound weights from the tops of the molds in the pouring department was labeled as to its capacity. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to ensure the under the hook lifting devices are labeled with their capacity according to ASME B30.20a-2001 "Below the Hook Lifting Devices" and ASTM E2349-05 "Safety Requirements in Metal Casting Operations: Sand Preparation, Molding, and Core Making; Melting and Pouring; and Cleaning and Finishing" In accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(c), abatement certification is required for this violation (using the CERTIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET).
