Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being crushed while handling and moving granite slabs: (a) Location - Fabrication shop: On or about 10/3/05, an employee was fatally injured after attempting to handle and move granite slabs. Among other methods, a feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to instruct employees so they know how to properly handle and move granite slabs. Develop clear, written work rules so workers know where to position themselves during transitions. Develop clear work rules so the number of workers needed for the task is clearly communicated and understood. Post reminders near the work station. Ensure management involvement and oversight. Monitor and audit accordingly.
