Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 003 Hazard: CRUSHING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of crushing injury due to inadequate automotive lift maintenance. a) McCaddon Oldsmobile-Cadillac Inc., 2460 48th, Boulder, CO: The employer had not developed and implemented an inspection and maintenance program for the Gilbarco brand lifts used in the service area. Condition exposed employees to crushing injury due to lift failure. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to follow the 17 check items listed in the manufacturers (Gilbarco) publication, MDE 1604G titled "Inspection and Maintenance Instructions for All Gilbarco Swing Rail and Two-Post Fixed Piston Lifts". Abatement Note: Abatement certification and documentation are required for this item (See enclosed "Sample Abatement-Certification Letter"). Abatement Note: Paragraph 6.1.2 in the Automotive Lift Institute publication number ALOIM- 1994 lists the minimum requirements a preventive maintenance technician must possess prior to performing preventive maintenance on automotive lifts.
