Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 003 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of fire and explosions: (a) A fixed fire extinguishing system was not provided in the lower basement levels of the coke barn, coke crushing and conveying rooms and the bulk coke storage room. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard would be to install approved, supervised automatic extinguishing systems which activate the building fire alarm, as specified in the Life Safety Code 101, Chapter 40.3.2 for Industrial Occupancies and in the NFPA 63,1975, 5-2.1.
