Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 003 Hazard: FALLING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that, employees are exposed to falling hazard, created by moving parts of a chain conveyor: a/ Refrigeration Room "B" Box Area - Chain Conveyor: Means, e.g., emergency "STOP" device was not provided on the conveyor, to prevent the employee(s) from being exposed to the moving parts while pulling stacks of crates into the Refrigeration Room. Observed 5/21/02. REFERENCE: The American Society of Mechanical Engineers Safety Standards for Conveyors and Related Equipment; ASME B20.1-1990, Rule 5.11(c) and CFR 1918.64(l)(3) Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to: 1) Equip remotely controlled chain conveyors with emergency stopping devices (i.e. emergency stop buttons, pull cords) along conveyor route. 2) Train employees on device use. 3) Perform inspections on all emergency stopping device(s) at predetermined intervals and document inspection findings.
