Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 003 Hazard: BURNS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm in that employees were exposed to the hazard of steam burns due to inadequate inspection and maintenance on steam piping systems: Throughout the Boilerhouse/Powerhouse #1, employees were exposed to serious burns from steam lines which were not inspected nor properly maintained. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazardous condition would be to implement a routine, periodic inspection protocol on all components of the steam piping system including, but not limited to, supporting elements (i.e. anchors and supports) and piping erosion/corrosion monitoring as described in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Code for Pressure Piping B31.1 - 2001 Edition. **Abatement documentation required for this item**
