Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 003 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not provide employment and a place of employment which were free of recognized hazards in that employees were exposed to crushing injuries from dropping steel plates and hoods. a.Location H-27-M. Test cell employees removed floor mounted steel plates using a pry bar. The pry bar could slip and cause the approx. 1/2 x 38 x 36 inch steel plate to fall on employees' fingers. (Item #3a) b.Location H-24-E. Employees removed steel hoods stored in a vertical rack without the aid of a lifting device to prevent dropping of the hoods. (Item #3b) Among others, feasible and acceptable abatement methods are to: 1)Use lifting magnets to remove plates. 2)Use eye hooks to move hoods or stack hoods horizontally so nylon slings can be used.
