Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 003 Hazard: CAUGHT

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being caught in the dies of the Sack Press at the west minip side of the machine. A worker working on part # WG 206 25-4 was observed approa- ching the machine while it was in operation to take measurements on the part in the machine. One feasible method to correct this hazard among other methods, is to change the current operating procedures to prohibit workers from approaching the machine while it is in operation. In addition, the two way communication system that is in place should be maintained in proper working order to allow the person taking measurements to communicate with the press operator located in the control booth. OR IN THE ALTERNATIVE: 29 CFR 1910(a)(3)(ii): Point(s) of operation of machinery were not guarded to prevent employee(s) from having any part of their body in the danger zone(s) during operating cycle(s): SACK PRESS WEST MINIP SIDE: SACK PRESS WAS NOT PROVIDED WITH GUARDING THAT WOULD PREVENT WORKERS FROM ACCIDENTALLY HAVING ANY PARTS OF THEIR BODY BETWEEN THE DIES OF PRESS AS IT WAS CYCLED. WORKERS WERE OBSERVED EXPOSED TO THE DIES OF THE PRESS WHILE TAKING MEASUREMENTS ON WG PART #206-25-4.
