Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 003 Hazard:
29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices, electronic safety devices, etc. a) On or about March 26, 2021, employees operating the Park Industries Yukon Saw, processing stone slabs, were exposed to point of operation, the machine was equipped with inadequate guards in that the guards did not protect against the X, Y-axis travel of the saw arm, and the chain-link fence was not guarded in the front perimeter allowing access to the point of operation b) On or about March 26, 2021, employees operating the KUKA BACA Robotic Table Saw, processing stone slabs, were exposed to the point of operation saw blade and a struck-by hazard from the movement of the robotic arm on its X, Y, Z axes, in that an opening of 47 inches existed below each of the light curtains that were not guarded. c) On or about March 26, 2021, employees operating a Velocity Polisher, processing stone slabs, were exposed to rotating polishing wheels and pinch point rubber hold-downs in that the machine had a brush screen as a guard allowing access to the polishing wheels and the rubber hold-downs. d) On or about March 26, 2021, employees operating a Fastback Polisher, processing stone slabs, were exposed to rotating polishing wheels in that the machine had a brush screen as a guard allowing access to the polishing wheels. The Sims-Lohman, Inc. was previously cited for a violation of this occupational safety and health standard or its equivalent standard 29 CFR 1910.212 (a)(1), which was contained in OSHA Inspection Number 1460656, citation number 1, item number 6 and was affirmed as a final order on 7/22/2020, with respect to a workplace located at 6325 Este Avenue Cincinnati, Ohio, 45232.
