Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 003 Hazard:
29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1):Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices, electronic safety devices, etc. a. On or about December 21, 2020, located on Strapping Line 2, the employer did not ensure that employees were protected when they placed folded pieces of paper by hand into the ingoing nip point of a recoiler as it rotated, thereby exposing the employees to a caught-in hazard. b. On or about January 5, 2021, located on the shop floor on Strapping Line 1, the employer did not ensure that employees were protected from the ingoing nip point of a recoiler. On January 5, 2021, an employee placed a folded piece of paper into the ingoing nip point on a recoiler's coil material as it rotated. The employee was pulled into the recoiler resulting in death.
