Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 003 Hazard:
29 CFR 1926.652(g)(2): Additional requirement for shield systems used in trench excavations. Excavations of earth material to a level not greater than 2 feet (.61 m) below the bottom of a shield shall be permitted, but only if the shield is designed to resist the forces calculated for the full depth of the trench, and there are no indications while the trench is open of a possible loss of soil from behind or below the bottom of the shield. On September 18, 2019, a trench shield used in an approximate 16 foot deep trench located on the northeast corner of E. Edgewood Dr. and Providence Ave in Appleton, WI 54913 had more than two feet of unprotected soil underneath the shield. The employer was connecting a new 18 inch sanitary sewer line to an existing line with a 24 inch casing resulting in the trench shield resting approximately three feet above the bottom of the trench.
