29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices, electronic safety devices, etc. a. On or before April 4, 2019, in the extrusion department, the employer did not ensure that the operator entrance to the 1675 Wean United Youngstown Foundry & Machine aluminum extrusion press (press 2; model: 7"-1675 ton press; S/N: 38876) was guarded to protect employees from various machine hazards such as the butt conveyor, billet transveyor, and loader area. b. On or before April 4, 2019, in the extrusion department, the employer did not ensure that the barrier guard/railing on the opposite side of the operator entrance to the 1675 Wean United Youngstown Foundry & Machine aluminum extrusion press (press 2; model: 7"-1675 ton press; S/N: 38876) was secured and not easily bypassed to protect employees from various machine hazards such as the loader area and billet transveyor. c. On or before April 4, 2019, in the extrusion department, the employer did not ensure that the loader gate on the 1250 side of the 1675 Wean United Youngstown Foundry & Machine aluminum extrusion press (press 2; model: 7"-1675 ton press; S/N: 38876) had a safety rated interlock and was secured in the closed position with more than a bungee strap.
