29 CFR 1926.652(c)(4)(i): Support systems, shield systems, and other protective systems not utilizing Option 1, Option 2 or Option 3, above, shall be approved by a registered professional engineer. On June 25, 2018, employees were exposed to cave in hazards while working in a 27 foot deep excavation where the shield systems did not use shoring, sloping, a manufactured protective system or a system designed by a registered professional engineer.
