Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 003 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were likely to cause death or serious physical harm to the employees in that employees were exposed to struck by/caught between hazards and resulting blunt force trauma injuries from roof truss collapse: a.A & B Used Cars, Auto Auction Building - Employees installed trusses on the Auto Auction building. The trusses erected, were not installed in accordance with BCSI 1-03 in that temporary lateral and diagonal bracing were not installed on the top cord, interior web temporary diagonal bracing was not installed every 10 trusses, the bottom chord did not have temporary diagonal bracing installed, and ground bracing was not installed for the trusses on the west end of the building, as determined on 05/08/08. NOTE: Among other methods, one or more feasible and acceptable methods of abatement to correct this hazard would be to follow the manufacturer's recommendations on roof truss erection or the BSCI 1-03 issued by the Wood Truss Council of America and Truss Plate Institute.
