Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 003 Hazard: CUTS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of amputation: (a) On or before February 28, 1998, the employer was utilizing hydraulic pill presses in their manufacturing process without implementing written instructions for all the hydraulic pill presses establishing guidelines for operation and care of the presses. American National Standards Institute (ANSI) B11.2-1982, paragraph 4.1.1 states: "It shall be the responsibility of the manufacturer to furnish written instructions with the hydraulic power press to establish guidelines for the operation and care of the press." Abatement Note: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct the hazard is to ensure that up-to-date guidelines and operating instructions are written, published and accompany each hydraulic pill press used in the United States. Abatement Note: Abatement certification and documentation are required for this item (see enclosed "Sample Abatement Certification Letter").tion
