Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 003 Hazard: UNAPOPPROC
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to ladder hazards: a) On or about June 6, 2005 and at times prior Timpas Feedyard LLC did not ensure that employees were protected from ladder hazards. 1. Rungs of some job made ladders were less than 3/4 inch diameter, #4;1/2 inch rebar was used. 2. All welding on the ladders did not conform to "Code for Welding in Building Construction" (AWSD1.0-1966). 3. The distance from the rungs to the nearest permanent object in back of the ladder was not at least 7 inches. 4. Bent rails and rungs were not repaired or replaced. 5. Cages or wells were not provided on all ladders that required them. 6. Landing platforms were not provide at proper elevations depending on the ladders. 7. Ladders were not inspected and maintained on a regular basis. 8. Permanent ladders were not properly attached to the structure. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method of abatement to correct this hazard is: a) A person competent in ladder design and construction needs to do an inspection of the plant ladders. The deficiencies need to be corrected and the employees trained to inspect the ladders regularly.
