Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 003 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a) The two, pushbutton controllers and the joystick-type controller on the remote control box for the Webb drill were not marked for identification of functions as prescribed by Section 3.4.1.3 of ANSI B11.8-1983, entitled American National Standard for Machine Tools - Drilling, Milling, and Boring Machines Safety Requirements for Construction, Care, and Use. Webb drill operators using the remote control box for setup work were exposed to being struck by the moving drill head carrier due to this lack of identification which could cause the operator to select and activate an unintended control. One feasible and acceptable abatement method, among others, to correct this hazard is to mark the controls with words, letters, symbols, or other identifiers that are readily distinguishable from each other and easily understood by the operators.
