Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 003 Hazard: BURNS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to molten metal burn injuries from explosions or "blow outs" in the potrooms, due to tools, such as tongs and crowbars, not being preheated to remove moisture prior to use when they would come in contact with molten metal. a. Among other methods, one feasible and accepted method to correct this hazard is to require tools such as crane tongs and crowbars to be pre-heated before insertion into molten liquid metal.
