29 CFR 1910.138(a): The employer did not select and require employee(s) to use appropriate hand protection when employees' hands were exposed to hazards such as those from skin absorption of harmful substances; severe cuts or lacerations; severe abrasion; punctures; chemical burns; thermal burns; and harmful temperature extremes in the following instances. a) On June 6, 2023, Department # 3 Can Department, an employee operating a Can Washing Machine, was exposed to hazards such as those from skin absorption of harmful substances; chemical burns while not using appropriate hand protection. The employee was wearing disposable latex gloves while handling Power Wash B (Alkaline Cleaner) a highly corrosive chemical (PH of 13.4 to 13.9) exposing employees to severe skin burns, serious eye damage, irreversible damage 21 days after exposure and/or permanent irreversible disability such as blindness. b) On June 6, 2023, Department # 1 Machinist Building, an employee operating a TRAK TRL1745P Model #TRL1745P/Serial #007528 Milling Machine, was cleaning out metal shavings without using appropriate hand protection when he cut his finger on the metal shaving(s) exposing employees to severe cuts or lacerations; severe abrasion; punctures.
