29 CFR 1910.132(d)(1): Hazard assessment and equipment selection. 29 CFR 1910.132(d)(1): The employer shall assess the workplace to determine if hazards are present, or are likely to be present, which necessitate the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). If such hazards are present, or likely to be present, the employer shall: 29 CFR 1910.132(d)(1)(i): Select, and have each affected employee use, the types of PPE that will protect the affected employee from the hazards identified in the hazard assessment; On or about August 3, 2016, the employer had not addressed the physical hazards associated with combustible metal dust operations in the Secondary department in the workplace hazard assessment. Equipment operators and maintenance employees have exposure to combustible metal dust during regular operations, maintenance and service activities and when drums are changed out. These employees are exposed to a metal dust flash fire hazard during these activities that were performed without personal protective equipment appropriate for the hazard.
