29 CFR 1926.652(g)(1)(ii): Shields were not installed in a manner to restrict lateral or other hazardous movement of the shield in the event of the application of sudden lateral loads: a) On or about April 24, 2025, at the Foxdale Ave. Water Main Project in Winnetka, Illinois, the employer did not ensure that shields, such as the Build-A-Box Modular Trench Shield BAB-4 and the Build-A-Box Modular Trench Shield BAB-6, were installed to restrict movement in the event of sudden movement. The boxes occupied by employees were not secured to prevent movement during an unexpected event causing lateral loads. b) On May 2, 2025, at the Foxdale Ave. Water Main Project in Winnetka, Illinois, the employer did not ensure that shields, such as the Build-A-Box Modular Trench Shield BAB-4 and the Build-A-Box Modular Trench Shield BAB-6, were installed to restrict movement in the event of sudden movement. The boxes occupied by employees were not secured to prevent movement during an unexpected event causing lateral loads. In accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(d), abatement certification is required for this violation (using the CERTIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET), and in addition, documentation demonstrating that abatement is complete must be included with your certification. This documentation may include, but is not limited to, evidence of the purchase or repair of the equipment, photographic or video evidence of abatement, or other written records.
