Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002A Hazard:
29 CFR 1910.132(a): Protective equipment, including personal protective equipment for eyes, face, head, and extremities, protective clothing, respiratory devices, and protective shields and barriers, shall be provided, used, and maintained in a sanitary and reliable condition wherever it is necessary by reason of hazards of processes or environment, chemical hazards, radiological hazards, or mechanical irritants encountered in a manner capable of causing injury or impairment in the function of any part of the body through absorption, inhalation or physical contact. (a) On or about February 21, 2024, the employer had not provided and ensured the use of face shields necessary to protect employees from burns due to potential spill/splashing of molten metal while employees are pouring molten metal in the running horizontal spinner and the operation of the horizontal spinner. The hazard of eye and face injuries from molten metal splash is recognized by industry consensus standards including American Foundry Society (AFS) - "Guide for Selection and Use of Personal Protective Equipment and Special Clothing for Foundry Operations". (b) On or about February 21, 2024, the employer had not provided and ensured the use of hard hats necessary to protect employees from falling objects and flying objects while employees are using overhead cranes to perform the babbitting process and the operation of the horizontal spinner while the machine was operated above the posted Revolutions Per Minute (RPM) operating speed. The hazards of head injuries from falling objects, moving equipment, and flying debris are recognized by industry consensus standards including American Foundry Society (AFS) - "Guide for Selection and Use of Personal Protective Equipment and Special Clothing for Foundry Operations". (c) On or about February 21, 2024, the employer had not provided and ensured the use of spats necessary to protect employees from burns due to potential spill/splashing of molten metal while employees are pouring molten metal in the running horizontal spinner and the operation of the horizontal spinner. The hazards of burns from physical contact with molten metal splash, molten metal runout, and spills are recognized by industry consensus standards including American Foundry Society (AFS) - "Guide for Selection and Use of Personal Protective Equipment and Special Clothing for Foundry Operations".
