Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a potential amputation hazard or other injury: (a) For employees operating the freight elevator and exposed to the potential hazard of becoming caught between the freight elevator car and elevator shaft walls. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to follow the requirements set forth in ANSI/ASME A17-1984 rule 204.1a: Enclosure Required. Elevators shall be equipped with a car enclosure. This company was previously cited for a violation of this Occupational Safety and Health Standard or its equivalent standard which was contained in OSHA Inspection Number 102763000, Citation Number 1, Item Number 3A, issued on 04/12/2002.
