29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1)The point of operation of machines whose operation exposes an employee to injury, shall be guarded. The guarding device shall be in conformity with any appropriate standards therefor, or, in the absence of applicable specific standards, shall be so designed and constructed as to prevent the operator from having any part of his body in the danger zone during the operating cycle. a. Located in the General Fabrication Department, employees operated a vertical HE&M saw, model number V100HLM-3, serial number 887205 in order to cut tungsten rings. The saw had its telescopic guarding retracted and secured with a broken thumb set screw which did not allow for employees to extend the guard over the blade, thereby exposing the employees to an amputation and/or laceration hazard from the unguarded blade.
