Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of electrical shock while working on the control box of a Jib hoist without having the power physically locked out: a) Machine shop - the Square D safety switch, 30 amp 600 volt A.C/D.C., 3 phase providing power to the Jib Hoist control box was not locked out with a physical lock to prevent power from being accidently turned on, exposing employee to a shock/electrocution hazard. Observed 4/5/88 Abatement Note: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard would be to provide and require the use of physical locks so that the power can be "Locked Out" in the off position.
