Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being crushed while handling and moving marble and granite slabs: (a) Location - 99 Hammond Street, Waltham, MA: On or about 7/19/11, an employee was injured while attempting to handle and move a granite slab. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to instruct employees so they know how to properly handle and move slabs; develop clear, written work rules so workers know where to position themselves during transitions; develop work rules so the number of workers needed for the task is clearly communicated and understood; post reminders near worker areas; ensure management involvement and oversight to monitor and audit accordingly.
