Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to struck-by hazards created by the shattering of PVC pipe under pressure, in service for distributing compressed air: a) The employer installed a 135 ft. long, 1.0 in. diameter PVC pipe for distribution of compressed air in the plant. Abatement method: Among other methods, a feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to replace the PVC pipe with a type approved for use with compressed air; i.e., non-shattering plastics like HDPE and ABS, or metals like copper or steel. In accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(c), abatement certification is required for this violation (using the CERTIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET).
