Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: STRUCK BY

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety & Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that; the employees were exposed to being struck by roof truss due to the improper rigging of the wood roof trusses: a) 604 Mission Bay Dr., Satellite Beach - Employees were exposed to being struck by roof trusses while the crane was hoisting and moving the trusses into position. The 54 foot roof trusses were hoisted by the use of a double chain sling. The use of a double sling on a truss over 30 feet could cause lateral bending. While a truss is being hoisted and moved the wood truss could break thereby striking an employee. Among one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard would be to use a spreader bar or stiff back in accordance with the Building Component Safety Information, Guide to Good Practice for Handling, Installing, Restraining and Bracing of Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses.
