Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fall hazards when walking and standing on elevated roller conveyors: (a)Elyria Foundry Co. LLC, 120 Filbert St., Elyria, Ohio: On or about December 15, 2009, the employer did not ensure that employees did not stand or walk on an elevated roller conveyor while cleaning the Palmer sand mixer in the #1 Core Room. The employees stood on the conveyor on a daily basis in order to dismantle and clean the mixer. The employees were at risk of serious injury from fall hazards. Among other methods, a feasible abatement method to correct this hazard is to comply with ASME B20.1-2009, Safety Standard for Conveyors and Related Equipment. Section 6.11.1, Roller and Wheel Conveyors references installing tread plates between the rollers to provide a stable walking and working surface. In accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(c), abatement certification is required for this violation (using the CERTIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET).
