Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm in that employee(s) were exposed to being struck by a nail(s) from pneumatic nail gun(s): (a) IN THE PRODUCTION AREA(S) -- EMPLOYEE(S) WHO ARE REQUIRED TO USE PNEUMATIC NAIL GUN(S) IN ASSEMBLING WOOD TRUSSES, WERE EXPOSED TO BEING INJURED BY ACCIDENTAL FIRING OF NAIL(S) DURING OPERATION. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO COMPLY WITH THE PROVISIONS OF AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARD FOR POWER TOOLS, ANSI SNT-101-2002, SAFETY REQUIREMENTS FOR PORTABLE, COMPRESSED-AIR-ACTUATED, FASTENER DRIVING TOOLS, SECTION 8.4.2 FOR SAFE OPERATION OF SAID EQUIPMENT AND/OR TO ADOPT THE BASIC SAFETY WORK HABITS AS PUT FORTH BY THE INTERNATIONAL STAPLE, NAIL AND TOOL ASSOCIATION (ISANTA) WHICH WAS DEVELOPED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE CONSTRUCTION SAFETY COUNCIL AS FOLLOWS: 1) CHOOSE A TRIGGER SYSTEM FOR YOUR SPECIFIC NEEDS; 2) KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER WHEN NOT WORKING; 3) ALWAYS WEAR APPROVED SAFETY GLASSES; AND 4) READ AND UNDERSTAND ALL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS such as, but not limited to, do not point the tool toward yourself or anyone else; do not operate at a pressure above the manufacturers' rating; do not depress the trigger unless the nosepiece of the tool is directed onto a safe work surface; do not carry the tool by its air supply hose and/or while the trigger is depressed; do not overreach; keep proper footing and balance. SPECIFIC ABATEMENT DOCUMENTATION IS REQUIRED FOR THIS ITEM.
