Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: Burns from accidental contact with hot surfaces: a) On or about 02/24/09 at Augusta, GA: Employees were exposed to a hot metal pipe, while performing maintenance work on the second floor in the power house. The employer failed to guard the Power Boiler #2 safety exhaust line, which was heated to temperatures of approximately 250 Degrees Fahrenheit. b) On or about 02/24/09 at Augusta, GA: Employees were exposed to the Kiln, while performing work on the Burner Floor of the #2 Kiln, near the Operator Control Room. Temperatures in the Kiln reach 2100 Degrees Fahrenheit. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THESE HAZARDS IS: One feasible and acceptable abatement method is to insulate or barricade the hot pipes which will reduce or eliminate the likelihood of contact with the hot pipes and the hot surface of the #2 Kiln. No abatement certification or documentation is required for this item.
