Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a fire hazard: The following natural gas heaters and their supply lines were not maintained and operated in a safe manner: a)Rod and Bar, Near Furnace Pulpit, on or about 1/20/09: Natural gas supply lines and regulators for heaters were exposed to damage while in walkways. b)Crane Repair, on or about 2/3/09: Natural gas supply lines and regulators for heaters were exposed to damage while in walkways. c)Bar Anneal #2, on or about 2/3/09: A natural gas valve was not provided with a handle. The supply line for a natural gas torch was crimped. d)Bar Finish, Bulldozer 126 area, on or about 2/6/09: The supply line for a natural gas heater was exposed to damage while in a walkway. e)Press, Outside of Millwrights Crib, on or about 2/17/09: The supply line for a natural gas heater was exposed to damage, was crimped and crushed. aaa)Bar Finish, Bldg. 70, Sonic Inspection, north wall, on or about 2/5/09: The supply line for a natural gas heater was exposed to damage while in the walkway. bbb)CPM Bldg., behind the old lunch room, on or about 2/13/09: The supply line for a natural gas heater was exposed to damage while in the walkway. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct these hazards are to: 1.Ensure that natural gas supply lines and regulators are protected from physical damage. 2.Install and maintain the natural gas fired heaters, and their delivery system in accordance with NFPA 54, National Fuel Gas Code, sections 5.8.4, 5.12, 5.6.5, 9.6.4, 7.2.1, 9.6.1. Abatement documentation must be submitted for these items.
