Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: DUST&FUMES
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that caused or were likely to cause death or serious physical harm in that employees were exposed to potential combustible whey dust fire and explosion hazards due to lack of static energy control during the filling and emptying whey from non-static dissipating flexible intermediate bulk container (FIBC). In the agglomeration, dry blending and packaging departments, There was not means to control static electricity generated during the emptying of combustible whey dust from non-static dissipating flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBC), super sacs. ABATEMENT NOTE: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to comply with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 77 Recommended Practice on Static Electricity Chapter 10 Specific Application, 10.1.6 Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers (FIBC) and 10.1.7 Container Linings.
