Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: HEAT

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that caused or were likely to cause death or serious physical harm in that employees were exposed to the hazard of potential fire and explosion from dust collectors, cyclones, storage bins, blower, screw conveyor were not designed to minimize damage that would occur in the event of a dust explosion inside machines: a) Soymeal-Three dust collectors, two cyclones, one heat exchanger, one hopper, one blower motor and one screw conveyor were located inside the facility and did not meet the protection or venting requirements on October 28, 2008 b) Wheat-There were four dust collectors, three cyclones, two hoppers and one heat exchanger were located inside the facility and did not meet the protection or venting requirements on October 28, 2008. c) Dry soy-there were four cyclones, one baghouse, one dryer and a pneumatic conveyor located inside the facility and did not meed the protection requirement on October 28, 2008. d) Storage bins, located inside facility, did not have explosion suppression system requirements on October 28, 2008. ABATEMENT NOTE: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct these hazards is to comply with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 61 Prevention of Fires and Dust Explosions in Agricultural and Food Processing Facilities; NFPA 69 "Standard on Explosion Prevention Systems." a) Equip dust collectors with deflagration venting, vented to the outside. b) Install deflagration suppression system and deflagration pressure containment system for the Soymeal, Wheat and Dry Soy Powder systems in accordance with NFPA 69. The duct collectors, connected to heat exchangers (coolers), protective devices include the volume of the heat exchangers. c) Install spark detection devices inside pneumatic conveyor system. d) Install proper fans and blowers in accordance with NFPA 61 ch 10.4.1 e) Install proper explosion panels and explosion suppression system in wheat storage bins in accordance the NFPA 61 ch. 6.3.1
