Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: CRUSHING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing injuries during the operation of an overhead crane: (a)Primary Mill - Plate Building. The 20 ton auxiliary hoist load block for the Northern overhead crane No. 2718146, was not level causing the sheaves to shift in the block which allowed the ropes to rub the load block and cause potential rope damage, on or about June 20, 2007. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to correct unsafe conditions disclosed by crane inspections before operation of the crane is resumed, as specified by section 2-2.3.3 of the ANSI B30.2.0 - 1967 standard, "Overhead and Gantry Cranes".
