Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: falls when climbing storage racks. a)Topp Business Solutions, Warehouse: employees were required to climb steel racks to retrieve products from the middle and top shelves, at a height of approximately 18 feet above the ground, with no fall protection provided, on or about December 2004. Among other methods, one feasible and useful method to correct the hazard - A stair tower, rolling ladder or portable ladder to gain access to the shelves should be used. However a lifting platform designed and approved for such use, and secured to the powered industrial truck as per American National Standards Institute safety standard for Low lift and High Lift trucks,ANSI/ASME B56.1-2000, Section 4.17.3(b), could also be used.
