Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a).Steam burn hazards while operating (opening and closing) a motor operated suction valve. Two (2) employees were exposed to leaking steam from the valve while attempting to bring the 2C BC pump back on line, on or about January 29, 2004. b).Steam burn hazards while working in the vicinity of a pump casing leak on BC Pump 2C during January 2004. The pump was leaking steam for several weeks before plant personnel erected barriers to keep out plant personnel. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct the hazard is to perform regular periodic maintenance on plant systems that carry pressurized steam.rized
