Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards associated with riggin bundles of granite slabs with untrained personnel: 300 Oak Street, Unit 920, Pembroke, Massachusetts: On or about 10-24-03 untrained workers were exposed to being struck by bundles of granite during the offloading from a container on a truck trailer as a result of rigging bundles without proper training on safe handling, rigging equipment and proper use of communication and hadn signals. Feasible and useful methods to correct this hazard, among other methods: 1) Provide training on safe handling, rigging equipment and proper use of communication and hand signals to all employees involved offloading process. 2) Post illustrations of hand signals on the worksite and train employees to use them. 3) Ensure that employees have access to rigging manuals before the job begins.
