Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: GUARDING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to death or serious injuries resulting from inadvertent activation of the baling press ram. (a)Plant floor, on April 20, 2004, and at times prior to, the vertical downstroke ram was fully activated while the bale chamber gate was in the up (open) position on the PIQUA Single Ram Vertical Downstroke Baler. ABATEMENT NOTE: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to comply with ANSI Z245.5-1997, paragraph 5.2.1 which requires that the ram shall not move unless the bale chamber gate is fully closed and latched, except when operated with a sustained-manual-pressure control. Note: Abatement certification required for this item.
