Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fractures and crushing injuries while working under automotive lift without safety locks engaged: a) Midas, 101 North Avenue, Grand Junction, CO: The hydraulic double post lift in bay five was partially raised while an employee worked underneath the vehicle without the safety locking devices (2) engaged. Abatement Note: Abatement certification is required for this item (See enclosed "Sample Abatement-Certification Letter"). Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to observe and follow with Automotive Lift Institute, Inc. publication titled "Automotive Lift Safety Tips". Paragraph 8 states, "Load vehicle on lift carefully. Position lift supports to contact at the vehicle manufacturer's recommended lifting points. Raise lift until supports contact vehicle. Check supports for secure contact with the vehicle. Raise lift to desired working height. CAUTION: If you are working under vehicle, lift should be raised high enough for locking device to be engaged."
