Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: UNAPEQUIP
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of steam burns due to inadequate procedures, equipment and training to respond to catastrophic releases of superheated steam: a)Employees of Coors Brewing Company were exposed to serious burns while responding to a large steam leak which resulted in a catastrophic steam release. No response procedures had been implemented to address large steam releases. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazardous condition would be to develop procedures and training to address catastrophic steam releases as described in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Code for Pressure Piping - 1998 Edition. Abatement Note: Abatement certification and documentation is required for this item (see enclosed "Sample Abatement-Certification Letter").
