Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of becoming caught in a conveyor in that: a) The emergency stop pull cords throughout the facility were not marked so that they were readily identifiable. b) Emergency stop pull cords were not provided in the limestone crusher building along all conveyors where employees work in the area. c) The coke receiving conveyor was not equipped with an audible alarm to warn employees when the conveyor is about to start. A feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard would be to install emergency pull cords (that are identifiable with signage), and/or guarding along all conveyor systems where employees may come into contact with a rotating part or an ingoing nip-point. Install start-up alarms such as an audible device in all areas where conveyors start automatically or remotely and follow the ASME B20.1 Safety Standard for Conveyors and Related Equipment.
