Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: FALLING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that, employees are exposed to falling hazard, created by moving parts of a chain conveyor: a) Refrigeration Room "B" Box Area - Chain conveyor: Means were not provided to ensure that employee(s) had adequate floor space, so that they would not have to stand on the conveyor track, while pulling stacks of crates into the Refrigeration Room. Observed 5/21/02. REFERENCE: The American Society of Mechanical Engineers Safety Standard for Conveyors and Related Equipment; ASME B20.1-1990; Rule 5.12(d), Rule 5.12(f) and 29 CFR 1918.64(l)(2). Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to: 1) Enforce safe track/conveyor operating practices and ensure employees stay off moving track. 2) Place appropriate warning signs, (i.e. no standing) near moving track.
