Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: BURNS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to severe burn injuries from fires and explosion caused by potential sources of ignition which included but were not limited to gas fired heaters that were located and utilized in environments that contained and processed combustible wood dust: a.) Pellet Mill Building/Gas Fired Heater/Located Above & Adjacent to the Pellet Bagging Station: Gas fired heater was not located outside or in a separate dust free room or building. ABATEMENT NOTE: Among other methods, feasible and acceptable methods to correct the condition include: (1) Locate the gas fired heater outdoors or in a separate dust-free room or building and transfer through duct work. (2) The heater's combustion air must be taken from a clean outside source.
