Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing hazards and/or the hazard of falling materials as a result of working under suspended loads: a) Stewart Lodges & 1944 Highway 92, Delta, CO: The employer did not ensure that employees were not allowed to worked under suspended loads. In the roof assembly area, employees were allowed to work under suspended loads in order to install ceiling materials. This condition resulted in three employees being struck by a roof after the below-the-hook lifting device failed. This issue is addressed in ASME B30.16-1993, The American Society of Mechanical Engineers - An American National Standard - Safety Standard for Cableways, Cranes, Derricks, Hoists, Hooks, Jacks, and Slings, Section 16-3.1. Abatement Note: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to: 1. Use stands or other stationary, fixed devices to support the load, rather than use the hoist to suspend the load above employees while they perform work underneath. Abatement Note: Abatement certification and documentation are required for this item (see enclosed "Sample Abatement Certification Letter").tion
