Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the following conditions: (a)Jindal United Steel Corp., 5200 E. McKinney, Baytown, TX, 77520: (1) Failure of spreader bars and/or components used for attaching magnetic lifting devices on cranes 3, 13, 14, 19, 25, 30, and 31 due to wear and deterioration such as rust and corrosion while lifting loads. (2)Failure of remotely operated lifting magnets and/or components, rectangular and circular, on cranes 3, 13, 14, 19, 25, 30, and 31 due to damage and deterioration while lifting loads and electric shock from damaged conductors. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement is perform periodic inspections on the spreader bars as recommended in ANSI/ASME B30.20 - 1985, Below the Hook Lifting Devices, Section 20-1, Inspection of Structural and Mechanical Lifting Devices, and Chapter 20-4, Remotely Operated Lifting Magnets and repair or remove damaged equipment from service. *** Certification and Documentation of Abatement Required ***
