Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: ELECTRIC
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of electrical shock, trauma or burns. The following conditions contributed to the existence of this hazard: (a)P/V Arctic, engine room - Where an extension cord (two wire type with ground pin) was in use to power a Graymill parts washer and the cord indicated an open ground in the wiring when tested with IDEAL circuit tester #61-035, the employer failed to ensure that the extension cord was in a safe and serviceable condition prior to allowing it to be used as a power source. One feasible means of abatement, among others, would be to inspect the extension cord prior to its use and repair or destroy and discard the defective equipment.
